TROY, N.Y. - In its final dual action of 2009 the 12th-ranked Lehigh wrestling team posted a 2-1 record at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College's McDonough Sports Complex. Senior David Craig and sophomore Zach Rey each went 3-0 on the day to lead the Mountain Hawks, who downed North Carolina 26-10 and beat No. 7 Nebraska 18-15 before falling to No. 6 Maryland 22-12 in their final dual of the day. Lehigh finishes the month of November with a 6-2 dual record.

“There were some positives today,” said Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. “We had a great first match and a great second match. We had opportunities in the third match but didn't get it done. That's something we'll work on moving forward.”

Lehigh's second dual of the day, against Nebraska, provided the most drama with the teams tied 15-15 heading to the final bout at heavyweight. Rey converted a second period takedown and went on beat the Cornhuskers' Tucker Lane 3-2 in a battle of top-10 wrestlers to provide the winning three point margin for the Brown and White.

The Mountain Hawks raced to a 9-0 lead against the Cornhuskers on three consecutive wins by decision by sophomore John McDonald (125) and seniors Matt Fisk (133) and Seth Ciasulli (141).

At 149, true freshman Joey Napoli made his varsity dual debut and led Chris Hacker in the third period, but Napoli was taken down, cradled and pinned as Nebraska came back with six big points with the fall coming at 6:42. A 10-4 decision by top-ranked Jordan Burroughs over sophomore Sean Bilodeau tied the dual at nine halfway, and the teams alternated wins by decision, with sophomore Brandon Hatchett and senior David Craig earning wins at 165 and 184 for Lehigh and Stephen Dwyer and Craig Brester picking up wins at 174 and 197 for Nebraska, setting up the winner-take-all showdown at heavyweight.

In the final dual of Lehigh's day things did not go as planned for the Mountain Hawks, who dropped seven matches, including four straight close decisions from 125-149. Bilodeau did his best to bring Lehigh back, taking Kyle John down and then to his back before pinning the Terrapin in 1:57 to make the score 12-6 Maryland at the halfway point.

The Terrapins earned a mild upset at 165 when Josh Asper held off senior Mike Galante 7-6 and Maryland added a win by decision from Mike Letts over freshman Robert Hamlin at 174 and a major decision from Hudson Taylor over sophomore Joe Kennedy at 197. Craig and Rey added wins by decision for Lehigh, with the sixth-ranked Rey upping his overall season record to 8-0.

Earlier in the day, Lehigh won seven of ten bouts from North Carolina, highlighted by major decision wins from McDonald and Craig and Rey's first fall of the season, as he took down Andrew Cekuta and turned him for the pin in just 28 seconds. All three of the Tar Heels' wins came from ranked wrestlers at 149, 157 and 165. At 174, junior Alex Caruso made his season dual debut, and downed Thomas Ferguson 6-1.

“We did some good things and some bad things today,” said Santoro. “We wrestled hard but didn't finish the job. Losing is one thing but getting beat on mental mistakes is something we talked about.

Santoro continued, “We did a great job against Nebraska, but pretty much got pushed around in our last match. We were getting beat at the end of periods and if you do that you're not going to reach your goals.”

The Mountain Hawks will have the next month off from competition before returning to action at the Midlands Championships, December 29 and 30 in Evanston, Ill.

TROY, N.Y. - The Penn wrestling team went 2-1 at the Northeast Duals, held Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College. The Quakers easily defeated Sacred Heart to open the day, 46-9, then followed that up with a 22-12 decision over Appalachian State. Penn looked like it might control its dual with Michigan, as well, but the Wolverines won the last three matches to gain a 19-12 victory.

The duals were Penn's first of the season, after competing in a pair of early-season tournaments.

In Saturday's first match, against Sacred Heart, Penn won four weight classes by forfeit and took three other decisions by fall -- Bryan Ortenzio at 133, Gabriel Burak at 165, and Scott Giffin at 174.

Penn's second match, with Appalachian State, was a little more of a struggle. Mark Rappo put Penn up early with a major decision over Tony Gravely, but ASU got three of those points back with a win at 133. Zack Kemmerer and Troy Hernandez upped Penn's lead with wins at 141 and 149, before ASU got a win at 157. Burak, Giffin and Harrison Cook put the match away with wins at 165, 174 and 184, and Micah Burak capped off the win with a 6-3 decision at 197.

The Penn-Michigan match went back and forth through the first six weight classes, as Rappo, Kemmerer and Gabe Burak all won by decision -- Burak defeating the 19th-ranked wrestler in his weight class, Aaron Hynes -- while Dan White, Hernandez and Jake Hunter all lost by decision. Giffin briefly broke the tie, defeating Michigan's Justin Zeerip to put Penn up, 12-9. However, UM's Erich Smith gave the Wolverines a lead they wouldn't relinquish with an 11-2 major decision over Cook. In the penultimate match, Micah Burak did all he could to get Penn back ahead at 197 but fell 1-0 to the nation's 14th-ranked wrestler at that weight class, Anthony Biondo. Eddie Phillips then wrapped it up for Michigan with a 10-3 decision over Tyler Blakely at 285.

Gabe Burak and Giffin were the lone Penn wrestler to go 3-0 on the day, Burak's performance highlighted by his win over Hynes. Both Rappo and Kemmerer were 2-0 after opening the day with forfeit wins.

Penn returns to action next Sunday, Dec. 6, when the Quakers travel to State College to participate in the Penn State Open.
