BUCKNELL WRESTLING GOES 1-2 AT NORTHEAST DUALS
Bison Lose to No. 17 Central Michigan and No. 24 Virginia, Defeat Appalachian State

TROY, N.Y. - The Bucknell wrestling team faced three teams on Saturday at the Northeast Duals and came away with a 1-2 record. The Bison defeated Appalachian State 26-8, but fell to No. 17 Central Michigan (25-6) and No. 24 Virginia (30-11). The win over the Mountaineers was the first of the season for Bucknell, which is now 1-4 this year.
Five Bucknell wrestlers posted two wins on the day, with freshman Derek Reber (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) and Jay Hahn (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) gathering victories against Central Michigan and Appalachian State. David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville), Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) and Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) each posted wins opposite Appalachian State and Virginia.
In the opening match against the Chippewas, Marble and Rendos, who are ranked No. 14 nationally in their respective weight classes, both lost in the same dual match for just the fourth time in the last three years. All four occurrences have come against ranked opponents.
The 133-pound Marble bounced back from his 7-2 loss to No. 16 Conor Beebe to pin the Mountaineers' Frank Cellorio in 4:52 and he posted a 3-0 victory against Matt Bonson. Wrestling at 165, Rendos claimed a 6-1 victory over Kyle Blevins of Appalachian State and scored a 12-3 major decision against Virginia's Beau Fisher. Rendos now has 68 career victories, placing him three shy of eighth place on the Bison all-time list.
Reber, a 125-pounder, won his first two matches of the day to improve to 4-0 in duals this season. The first three wins were by shutout. However, his dual winning streak ended with a 7-4 decision against No. 17 Ross Gitomer of Virginia.
While Bucknell opened the day winning just two individual matches against Central Michigan, it came back to post seven victories against Appalachian State, a team it lost to 24-12 at last year's Northeast Duals. The Bison won the first four to open a 14-0 lead en route to the 22nd win of head coach Dan Wirnsberger's Bucknell career. That ties him for second in program history.
The Bison and Cavaliers split their first six individual matches as Virginia held a slim 12-11 advantage. However, the Cavaliers won the final four bouts, including one by pin and another by forfeit.
Bucknell faced a total of seven ranked wrestlers in the 30 matches on Saturday and went 0-7 in those bouts.
Of the four losses the Bison have as a team this year, three have come against ranked foes.
Bucknell, which is 0-1 against EIWA competition this season, will return to conference action Tuesday, Dec. 2, when it travels to Franklin & Marshall for a 7 p.m. match. The Bison defeated the Diplomats 41-6 inside Davis Gym last December.

Harvard at the Journeymen/Brute Northeast Duals

Troy, N.Y. - Junior co-captain Louis Caputo improved to 8-0 on the season with three wins for the Crimson at the Journeymen/Brute Northeast Duals Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College.
The Crimson (0-3) faced three nationally-ranked opponents at the dual meet tournament.  Harvard fell to No. 21 Old Dominion, 38-9, No. 24 Virginia, 36-11, and No. 5 Missouri, 43-7. Injuries forced the Crimson to forfeit matches at 125 and 141 in all three duals.
Junior J.P. O'Connor and freshman Walter Peppelman were Harvard's two other winners on the day.
Old Dominion took an early lead against the Crimson after two forfeits and a win by technical fall at 133 pounds. Peppelman suffered a tough 5-3 sudden victory loss to Joey Metzler at 149 pounds. Fourth-ranked O'Connor put the Crimson on the scoreboard with a pin at 157 pounds.  Captuo added to the lead with a 4-1 decision over Joe Budi at 184. Rookie Spencer DeSena kept it close in the heavyweight match, but Roy Dragon held on for a 2-0 win.
In the second dual of the day against Virginia,  Peppelman earned a hard-fought 9-8 win over Kellon Balum. O'Connor made it two wins in a row for Harvard with a 4-1 victory over Jed Moore. Caputo added to the team score with a 15-0 technical fall over Joe DeGaravila.
Peppelman (6-2) put the Crimson on the board against fifth-ranked Missouri, earning a 4-0 win over Brandon West to cut the Tigers lead to 17-3. No. 7 Mike Chandler pulled off the upset over O'Connor (7-1) at 157 pounds. Chandler scored on an escape in the third period for the win to hand O'Connor his first loss of the season. Caputo won his second match with bonus points, earning an 11-0 major decision over John Andrews.
The Crimson returns to action Saturday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas.

Lehigh upsets No. 7 Oklahoma State at NE Duals
11/29/2008

TROY, N.Y. - Bolstered from upset victories by freshman John McDonald and junior Mike Galante, No. 22 Lehigh opened competition at the Journeymen/Brute Northeast Duals with an 18-13 win over No. 7 Oklahoma State Saturday at the McDonough Athletic Complex at Hudson Valley Community College. The Mountain Hawks later added convincing wins over UNC Greensboro (36-6), Binghamton (33-6) and Appalachian State (36-3) to improve to 8-0 on the dual season.
"It was a very good day," said Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. "The guys wrestled hard and they're continuing to get better. We realize though that we still need to get better. We want to have a good tournament team in addition to a good dual team, because at the end of the year it comes down to being a good tournament team at the EIWAs and NCAAs."
McDonald and senior Trevor Chinn led the way for the Brown and White, as each wrestler won all four of his bouts on the day.
In the day's opener against Oklahoma State, McDonald started things off for the Brown and White with a 4-3 victory over No. 6 Obenson Blanc at 125. With the match deadlocked at three entering the third period, McDonald rode out the entire third period to win the match with a riding time point.
Following a Cowboy win at 133, Seth Ciasulli put Lehigh back in front, with an 8-6 sudden victory win over Jamal Parks at 141. Senior Trevor Chinn kept the run going with a 3-2 win over Luke Silver at 149.
Oklahoma State climbed within 9-6 with a win by decision at 157, but Galante started a three-bout Lehigh run, which all but cemented Lehigh's first-ever win over the nation's most storied college wrestling program. Galante trailed 3-2 late in the third period to tenth-ranked Brandon Mason at 165, but scored the go-ahead takedown on a lateral drop and rode out the final eight seconds to avoid overtime. Alex Caruso and David Craig followed with wins by decision to put Lehigh up 18-6, before the Cowboys captured the final two bouts.
"McDonald's match was really big for us early on," explained Santoro. "He had a great third period and picked up a big win. Ciasulli's win was also huge, as he beat a really good wrestler in Parks."
Santoro concluded, "And 165 was obviously a big one too. Galante went out and beat an All-American so that's a great win for him."
Following a two hour layoff, Lehigh captured eight bouts against UNC Greensboro. Chinn and freshman Sean Bilodeau helped blow the dual open with back-to-back wins by fall at 149 and 157. Lehigh's third pin came from freshman Joe Kennedy, who stuck Peter Sturgeon in 4:15 for his first career fall.
The dual started with consecutive wins for McDonald and junior Matt Fisk. McDonald put up 14 points in a decision over Mitchell Johnson, while Fisk was dominant in a 17-2 technical fall over Casey Boyle. The only drawback to the victory was that Galante suffered his first loss of the season, 5-3 against Spartan freshman Chris Bullins who is ranked nationally at 165.
The Mountain Hawks won nine bouts against Binghamton, including the second consecutive win by fall for Bilodeau, and the first fall of the season for Ciasulli, who pinned Anwar Goeres in 1:29. The featured bout of the dual was at 184 where nationally ranked Josh Patterson won by fall over David Craig. Patterson reversed Craig and scored a three-point near-fall to open the second period, then later caught Craig in a cradle, before securing the fall at the 4:30 mark.
The falls for Ciasulli and Bilodeau were the only bonus wins for Lehigh versus the Bearcats. The Mountain Hawks did take care of business in the close matches however, winning all four bouts that were decided by just one point. Junior Justin Allen saw his first dual action of the season, earning a 4-3 win over Dan Bittner at heavyweight.
In the final match of the day, Lehigh raced to a 23-0 lead with wins in the first six bouts, including a technical fall for McDonald and a pair major decisions for Fisk and Chinn. Santoro was able to get some more of his back-ups mat-time as well, as freshmen Brian Tanen (157) and Brandon Hatchett (165) and sophomore Kadeem Samuels (184) competed and won at their respective weights.
Lehigh
will return to the mats next weekend when the Mountain Hawks head to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, which begins Friday and runs through Saturday night.
