Maryland 20 Navy 14
COLLEGE
PARK, Md. - Sophomore Patrick
Gilmore earned
a tiebreak victory in the final match of the night to seal a 20-14 victory
against Navy Friday at Comcast Pavilion, giving the University of Maryland
wrestling team its second consecutive victory against the Midshipmen.
With the Terrapins holding a 17-14 lead heading into the heavyweight bout,
Gilmore needed to defeat Tyler Moyer to clinch a Terps victory.
Both wrestlers played it cautiously most of the match. After a scoreless first
period, Gilmore struck first with an early escape in the second. Gilmore still
led 1-0 late in the third and final period and had built his riding-time
advantage to 56 seconds. However, Moyer earned an escape with 30 seconds left to
knot the score at 1-1. Gilmore came up four seconds shy of picking up the
crucial riding-time point and the match went to overtime.
Neither Gilmore nor Moyer could score in the sudden-victory period. Gilmore
broke through in the first of two 30-second tiebreakers, however, taking a 2-1
lead. Gilmore held his lead in the second tiebreak, despite a furious attempt by
Moyer as everyone in attendance rose to their feet in anticipation.
It was the second time in the last three matches that Gilmore earned a win for
the Terps by taking the heavyweight matchup.
"I knew my condition was better than his," said Gilmore after the
match. "I knew I could out-last him. There was never a doubt in my mind
that I was going to win."
With its third straight dual win, Maryland evened its record at 7-7-1, while the
Midshipmen dropped their fifth straight, falling to 5-8.
"I don't know that we expected the match to end that way, with it coming
down to double-overtime. But, we knew it was going to be a tough match,"
Maryland head coach Kerry
McCoy said.
"Navy had a couple ranked starters returning from injury tonight, so we
beat a really good team. I told the guys it was going to come down to believing
in themselves and they did. We wrestled really well."
The match began at 125 pounds and Brendan
Byrne won his
fifth straight dual, 3-1, against Prescott Garner to put Maryland up 3-0.
The highly-anticipated 133-pound battle went to the Midshipmen, however, as
10th-ranked Joe Baker knocked off No. 8 Steven
Bell, 7-4.
The Terps and Midshipmen matched each other at 141 and 149 pounds. No. 13 Alex
Krom won a
14-5 major decision at 141 pounds against John Majka. At 149 pounds, No. 6 Bryce
Saddoris earned four points for Navy, defeating Dex
Lederer, 17-6.
Although Gilmore officially clinched the victory for the Terps, Kyle
John had
arguable the biggest win of the night for Maryland. John, a redshirt freshman,
defeated senior Joel Ahern, 5-3, at 157 pounds. Trailing 3-1 in the third
period, Ahern earned a reversal to tie the score. However, John registered a
late escape and tacked on the riding-time point.
"That was a great win for Kyle," McCoy said. "He lost to Navy's
back-up at Penn State's tournament this season, so to come back in such a short
time and beat their starter shows how much he has improved."
Up 10-7, Brian
Letters added
three more points to Maryland's total with a 3-1 victory against Matt DeMichiel
at 165 pounds.
The Midshipmen took advantage of Maryland's inexperience at 174 and 184 pounds,
though. No. 20 Luke Rebertus won an 11-3 major decision against Bradley
Nielson at 174
and Casey Caldwell defeated Chris
Lloyd, 11-7,
at 184.
Although Navy led for the first time of the night, 14-13, Nielson and Lloyd kept
it close enough for Hudson
Taylor and
Gilmore to bring home the victory.
Taylor, the 10th-ranked wrestler in the country at 197 pounds, put on a
dominating performance. Taylor defeated Philip Neese, 18-4, earning a crucial
four points to put Maryland up three heading into the heavyweight match,
assuring at least a tie with a loss by decision.
Fortunately for the Terps, Gilmore pulled through.
Maryland's next dual is next Sunday at resurgent Virginia Tech, which is
currently ranked 13th in the nation.
