American 27 Binghamton 8

WASHINGTON -  The American University wrestling team won its fourth straight dual match on Sunday with a 27-8 defeat of Binghamton at Bender Arena. The Eagles won eight of ten bouts on the day while improving to 3-0 at home. No. 3 Mike Cannon earned a third period technical fall to remain unbeaten at 22-0 and No. 12 Kyle Borshoff won by major decision to improve to 20-3.

Binghamton claimed the first match of the afternoon at 125 lbs. as Kyle Malmberg took a 7-3 decision over Thomas Williams. The Eagles however bounced back and won the next six bouts and eight of the final nine to take the victory.

Jasen Borshoff began the Eagles run of six straight wins with an 11-4 decision over Robert Slavin. J. Borshoff hit two single-leg takedowns in the first period and after an illegal hold call against Slavin took a 5-2 lead into the second period. Slavin began down in the second and escaped to move the score to 5-3 but J. Borshoff was able to counter a shot by Slavin and score a takedown for a 7-3 lead. J. Borshoff rode out the remainder of the period and held 2:17 of riding time heading into the third. In the final period J. Borshoff chose down and escaped Slavin to move the score to 8-3. J. Borshoff scored one final time in the match with a throw and with riding time advantage took the match by major decision, 11-4.

141-pounder Matt Mariacher and Anwar Goeres took their match into two tie-break periods before Mariacher was able to come away with the 6-5 victory. Goeres scored first in the first period with a takedown but a Mariacher escape brought the score to 2-1. Mariacher chose down to begin the second period and escaped to even the score at two where it would stand heading into the third frame. It was Goeres who chose down to begin the third and he managed an escape to take a 3-2 lead. Mariacher made several attempts at a takedown in the final minute of the period but Goeres continually backed away. Just when it seemed as though Goeres would escape with the victory, he was hit with a stalling call with three seconds remaining to tie the score at three and send the match to sudden victory overtime. Mariacher shot in on a high single-leg with under 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime and nearly finished the move after good defense from Goeres but time expired and the wrestlers went to tie breakers. Goeres escaped in the first tie breaker to take a 4-3 lead and Mariacher matched him in the second to force a second overtime. Neither grappler scored in the second sudden victory period and Mariacher began down in the second set of tie breakers. Goeres rode Mariacher for seven seconds to begin the tie breaker before Mariacher escaped to take a 5-4 lead. In the second tie breakers Mariacher built up ten seconds of riding time before Goeres escaped and held off the Bearcat in the final 10 seconds to secure the victory with riding time, 6-5.
No. 12 K. Borshoff took an early lead against Matt Kaylor at 149 lbs. en route to a 17-3 major decision. K. Borshoff scored an early takedown in the first period and turned Kaylor for three back points. K. Borshoff rode out the remainder of the period and took a 5-0 lead into the second. K. Borshoff began the period down and escaped for a 6-0 lead before taking Kaylor down a second time for an 8-0 lead. Kaylor chose to begin the third period neutral and K. Borshoff quickly hit a single-leg to push his advantage to 10-0. K. Borshoff scored three more takedowns in the period and with riding time earned the major decision, 17-3.

Freshman Patrick Graham fought back from an early 2-0 hole against Justin Lister to take a 4-2 decision at 157 lbs. Graham found himself trailing Lister after being caught by an inside trip but escaped to cut his deficit to 2-1. Graham then took the lead, 3-2, after scoring a takedown in the final minute of the period. Graham began the second period on top and rode out the period to build up 1:28 of riding time. Lister then began the third period on top and rode Graham for more than a minute to negate his riding time advantage. Graham scored an escape point with 40 seconds remaining and defended against Lister's attack late for the 4-2 decision.

At 165 lbs. Christopher Stout took a 10-3 decision against Ryan McGarity. Stout scored two takedowns early against McGarity for a 4-1 lead but a McGarity reversal brought the score to 4-3. Stout scored a reversal of his own to extend his advantage to 6-3 and took 1:15 of riding time into the second. Stout began the second period on top and rode out the period, building his riding time advantage to 3:15. In the third period Stout began down and scored a reversal to take an 8-3 lead. McGarity was later hit with a stalling call and with 4:06 of riding time Stout took the decision, 10-3.

No. 3 Cannon put in an impressive showing at 174 lbs. to earn a 27-11 tech-fall over Matt Berretta. Cannon began the match with a single-leg takedown off the whistle and scored six more takedowns in the first period to build a 14-6 advantage. Despite cutting Berretta after each takedown, Cannon was able to accrue 1:47 of riding time in the frame. Cannon cut Berretta to begin the second period and scored on a single-leg shortly after to move the score to 16-7. He rode out the remainder of the period and took 3:22 of riding time into the third. Cannon chose to begin the final period down and scored a reversal to move the score to 18-8. Cannon went on to score four more takedowns in the period and with riding time advantage earned the tech-fall, 27-11, at the 6:11 mark.

Binghamton got back on the board at 184 lbs. as No. 8 Josh Patterson earned a tech-fall against Anthony Fuschino, 17-0, at 4:33. The Eagles got right back at it at 197 lbs. though as Andrew Silber earned a 16-3 major decision over Corey Waite. Waite took the early lead over Silber, 2-0, but Silber escaped to move the score to 2-1. Silber later shot a high single-leg which Waite was able to defend but after a scramble Silber was awarded the takedown and took the lead, 3-2. Waite escaped Silber before the period expired and the two took a 3-3 tie into the second. Silber began down in the second period and quickly went ahead as he escaped and immediately scored on a low double-leg to take a 6-3 lead. Silber was able to turn Waite three times in the period for back points and held a 13-3 advantage heading into the third. The wrestlers began the third neutral and Silber scored on another takedown to push his lead to 15-3. With 3:29 of riding time, Silber took the bout by major decision, 16-3.

Quinton Pruett rounded out the day for American with a 7-4 decision against Carl Korpi at heavyweight. Pruett scored first on a low single-leg and scored a second takedown in the first period for a 4-2 lead. Pruett began the second frame on top and rode Korpi for the entire period, building up 3:30 of riding time. Pruett chose down to begin the third and was cut by Korpi, extending his advantage to 5-2. Korpi scored on a high single-leg late in the period but with riding time advantage Pruett took the decision, 7-4.

American will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 7, on the road at Rutgers at 3 p.m. The Eagles will then return home the following day to face George Mason at 1 p.m. Tickets to the George Mason dual are still available and are priced at $8 for adults and $5 for youth under 17.
